Q: What is pass-plus?

A: Pass-Plus is a training scheme, developed by the Driving Standards Agency, to help the newly qualified driver to:-

1. Speed up the process of gaining "quality" driving experience in a relatively safe environment. This is especially useful in areas where you may have little experience such as Motorway driving.
2. Acquire a Positive & Safe driving style.
3. Potentially reduce the risk of being involved in a road accident.
4. Save money on certain car insurance premiums.

Q: When can I take it?

A: Within 1 year of passing your practical driving test.

Q: What's involved?

1. After passing your test, you choose an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) like Tom, registered with the Pass-Plus Scheme.
2. They will then take you for a minimum of six modules (lessons) during which you will cover essential course subjects such as:-

1. Town Driving.
2. All-weather driving.
3. Out of town driving inc. rural roads.
4. Night driving.
5. Dual Carriageway driving.
6. Motorway driving.

Your instructor must be satisfied that you have achieved a good standard in all six modules, and you are displaying the essential skills that Positive Driving requires, such as

1. Improved observation.
2. The ability to anticipate hazards and take suitable action.
3. Care, courtesy and consideration for other road users.

In that case they will sign off your training form and send it to the DSA, who will then send you a Pass-Plus certificate.

Q: How can Pass-Plus affect my insurance premiums?

A: According to the DSA, insurers who support the scheme can give you a one year's no claims bonus for comprehensive, third party fire and theft and third party policies as soon as you insure your own car. This could more than cover the cost of the Pass-Plus lessons. You can also defer the no-claims bonus for two years if you currently drive under someone else's policy.
